4 Ebike Battery Tips for Greater Mileage

The battery is undeniably the most crucial component of an electric bike. It’s what fuels memorable ebike riding experiences, takes you longer distances, and keeps you and your vehicle safe, so keeping it in top shape is of utmost importance.

Here are some ebike battery tips to help you go further on your ebike without running out of power:

Keep the pedal assist levels low

Most electric bikes offer multiple levels of assistance that can be adjusted on the go. Moving at a quicker pace or across steep terrain calls for higher assistance. However, in most cases, the medium option is necessary and even helps preserve battery life. On flat terrain, you need minimal assistance, so the lowest setting will do. Basically, the less effort you put into pedaling, the less energy the motor will require and the longer your battery life.

Avoid fully charging the battery

You shouldn’t fully charge your battery in between rides, but rather bring it up to nearly 100%. It’s also important to replace your lithium-ion battery every 3 to 5 years since they degrade with each charge. They tend to degrade faster the longer you charge them at a high voltage. Moreover, if you aren’t be using your e-bike for a while, avoid fully charging the battery.

Nonetheless, the battery should be completely charged every couple of weeks to keep the cells from becoming unstable. This will help the batteries maintain their enhanced capacity for longer.

Don’t overcharge the battery

Charging the ebike battery for too long can weaken its capacity, so it’s imperative to take it off charge as soon as the charger’s light turns green. A timer might help you remember to remove the battery from the charging socket. You can use the timer on your mobile or grab a wall-mounted timer at any home improvement store.

Tip: Never unplug the charger before switching off the power outlet. First, disconnect the charger from the electrical outlet and disconnect the charger from the battery.
