The Ultimate Maintenance Guide for Your Electric Bike

Just like with traditional bicycles, electric bikes require routine maintenance and care. If you want to get the most out of your ebiking experience, you need to know how to look after your e-bike.

Here are some basic maintenance tips that will make sure you keep your e-bike in perfect condition for as long as possible:

Make sure the brakes are working

Inspect your brakes before every ride, and if the pads or rotors show any indications of wear, replace them immediately. The brakes on an e-Bike are crucial to the rider’s safety, thus keeping them in good working order should be a top priority. If your brakes fail to work properly, you risk putting yourself and your fellow riders in danger, especially on slopes.

It’s normal for brand-new brakes to make noise, but noisy brakes on an older e-bike should raise red flags. You might hear a squeaking noise when brake pad material, wheel rim material, or rotor material comes into contact with oil or grease. Squeaking can also be caused by brake surfaces that aren’t aligned correctly.

Ensure the battery is secure

Electric bike batteries are rechargeable, so you’ll probably get years of use out of your bike before the battery dies. Just make sure to put the battery on charge whenever you have access to a charging outlet. Long-term storage requires a lower charge level, between 30 and 60 percent (check your manual for details).

The weather is getting colder now, which means you need to keep a closer eye on your battery’s health. The lithium-ion batteries found in e-bikes can quickly drain out due to cold weather, so keep your battery (or the bike itself if the battery isn’t removable) in a warm place whenever the temperature drops below freezing.

Check the motor

Maintenance of an electric bike’s motor should include routine lubrication of its bearings, gears, and deceleration components. The controller should be changed if you notice excessive wear on the casings (both inside and outside) of the gears and bearings, distortion on the anti-vibration sheet, or the degradation/damage in the spring’s performance. Charge the electric vehicle’s lithium battery regularly to keep its voltage steady, avoid overheating the motor from lack of power, and delay the motor’s deterioration.
